Yantian Port Temporarily Closes to Export Containers

26/5/2021

Shenzhen's Yantian International Container Terminal has announced that due to the increasingly serious shipping delays, the yard of Yantian Port has a very high storage density that seriously affects the operation efficiency of the wharf and also leads to traffic congestion around the terminal.

In an emergency effort to relieve congestion, Yantian has decided to adopt the following measures:

  • From today, May 25, to Thursday, May 27, Yantian terminal will not accept any export containers gate in. During this period, pickups or returns of import containers will maintain normal operations.
  • Reception of export containers will resume on Friday, May 28, but export containers will only be accepted within 4 days of the ship's estimated arrival date. Whereas, in the past, containers can gate in 7 days in advance based on the ETA. This measure will be implemented from May 28 to June 3.

In addition to the congestion at Yantian Port, there have also been 5 confirmed COVID-19 cases. Areas near the port, along with those who have come in contact with the patients, have been placed into quarantine.

The port is also understaffed due to the COVID-19 testing among staff every day for seven consecutive days.

The delays at the port have also caused truckers to experience longer wait times - around 10 hours - to pick up or return containers.
